1. Preliminary Plans for 3rd Session of the Permanent Forum, May 10-
21, 2004
------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Member:
This month we are featuring preliminary plans for the Third Session
of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues in New York on May 10-21,
2004. This will be the group's final meeting during the International
Decade of the World's Indigenous Peoples which concludes in 2004.
"Indigenous Women" will be the theme of the meeting. Organizations
sending delegations to the meeting are encouraged to include
indigenous women in their delegations.
Written statements relevant to the work of the Forum are due by
February 16. Founded in 2001, the Permanent Forum on Indigenous
Issues is an outgrowth of the Working Group on Indigenous Populations
established by the UN Economic and Social Council. In 1994, the
United Nations General Assembly launched the International Decade of
the World's Indigenous Peoples (1995-2004) to increase the United
Nations's commitment to promoting and protecting the rights of
indigenous peoples worldwide.
