The Inter-Agency Consultation on Race in Latin America (IAC) is
holding a workshop on leadership and socioeconomic development that
will present good practices in local economic development in Afro-
descendant communities and will also conduct training on implementing
local development partnerships. With trainer-facilitated group and
plenary sessions, presentations and panels, the workshop will allow
participants to be actively engaged and learn from each other's
experiences. A site visits to local community projects will
complement the workshop's agenda.
The IAC participating institutions, in particular the Inter-American
Foundation (IAF), will be the sponsor of the event. In addition,
local civil society organizations and other interested parties will
also contribute to the workshop.
A Steering Committee consisting of representatives of the IAC
participating institutions and civil society leaders will oversee the
selection process and assist in the finalizing of workshop
activities.

Hotel La Quinta, La Ceiba, Honduras February 1-4, 2004
OBJECTIVES
The workshop's objectives are as follows:
Provide training on implementing local development partnerships
Draw attention to the successes as well as the challenges of
implementing local economic development partnerships
Create an opportunity for increasing channels of communication among
civil society, private sector, local and national governments and
with officials from participating institutions of the IAC
Promote the increasing participation of Afro-Descendant youth
leadership
PARTICIPANTS
Participants of the workshop will include representatives of Afro-
descendent civil society organizations from throughout Latin America
and the Caribbean, officials from local and national governments, and
representatives of international development agencies.
TRAVEL GRANTS AND SELECTION PROCESS
Around 30 travel grants will be awarded to representatives of non-
governmental organizations and civil society groups and will consist
of full sponsorship for the workshop including travel expenses, hotel
accommodations and miscellaneous expenses. We encourage organizations
based in Latin American and the Caribbean at different stages of
developments to apply, as we will award grants based on the potential
contribution individuals can make and also their ability to benefit
from the workshop. In order to ensure the active participation of
youth (age 18 to 24 inclusive, according to UN definition) in our
training and capacity building sessions, we encourage applications
from young leaders.
The travel grants are to be awarded to up to 2 (two) members of each
organization and individuals are to apply based on their affiliation
with non-governmental and civil society organizations.
HOW TO APPLY
Those interested in applying for a travel grant please fill out the
online Application Form by the December 19th deadline and you will be
notified if you have been selected by January 7th.
